Dell is kicking off the new year of 2022 at the CES with a fresh reinterpretation of the XPS 13 premium laptop, which will launch in Spring 2022. Called the Dell XPS 13 Plus and starting at $1,199, this model is a tried and true XPS design with a few new elements.

The most noticeable change from Dell is the row of function keys on the laptop closest to the screen. It is now a capacitive touch surface instead of hard keys. This includes the Escape key, but this row of touch-sensitive keys doubles as media and function keys.

However, simply holding down the Function key can achieve the same purpose. Equally interesting is the invisible glass touchpad. The XPS 13 Plus uses a haptic vibration motor under the touchpad to simulate a click.

We should be the judges of these new design ideas in our full review, but I’m skeptical of their usefulness. The biggest internal change of the latest Dell XPS 13 is the introduction of the 12th generation 28-watt (W) Intel Core processor.

These new processors from Intel can handle up to 28W of power at a time, almost double the 15W capacity of the previous generation.

More power available means the processor can handle more powerful tasks in data manipulation or retrieval, as well as 3D graphics processing and video encoding.

It boasts Express Charge 2.0 technology that can restore 80% of battery life in less than an hour. At this time, it is important to note that RAM is a very important decision when buying this laptop as Dell’s memory (RAM) and battery solutions are not user-changeable. The USB-A adapter that came in the box (made from 100% recycled materials) only allows you to use 2 USB-C ports. It’s interesting to see Dell moving in this direction when one of its major competitors, Apple, has decided to go back to basics with the latest MacBook Pro release. Dell has doubled the number of USB-C ports to just two on the XPS 13 Plus.

Dell removed the old functional and media key row for the touch-sensitive surface of the LED keys. Again, we’ll see how these seemingly unsophisticated design decisions are executed through full testing.

Dell XPS 13 Plus Release Date and Price

As mentioned above, the Dell XPS 13 Plus will be available in june 2022 for around $1,199. The frame of reference for what’s included in the $1,199 model would be the lowest end of all the hardware specs listed above.

Dell XPS 15 and XPS 17

Dell has announced 2022 models of 15.6-inch XPS 15 and 17-inch XPS 17 laptops, available starting from March (2022). The two devices differ from their pre-2021 counterparts in that they are powered by Intel’s latest 12th-generation processors.

Both models can be configured as Core i5-12500H, Core i7-12700H , or Core i9-12900HK. It comes with up to 64 GB of memory and 4 TB of storage, plus a 3840 x 2400 touchscreen option in addition to the old-school 1920 x 1200 non-touch display. The XPS 15 may also come with a 3456 x 2160 OLED touchscreen.

Where the two models differ (other than size) is in the graphics options. Both feature Intel’s integrated graphics and GeForce RTX 3050 options. However, the XPS 15 can go all the way up to the GeForce RTX 3060 while the XPS 15 is the best of the GeForce RTX 3050 Ti. The discrete GPU option on the XPS 15 is also all 40W, while the 17-inch is 60W.

If expected, the new configuration is welcome news. The XPS 15 and XPS 17 combine robust specs with the top-notch build quality and continue to be some of the best models in their category for users who don’t mind paying more than $1,000 for a perk.

However, Dell continued to have trouble cooling these chips in these thin chassis (especially the 15). Potential buyers may want to wait for an early review to see if the new 15-inch can keep the Alder Lake chips at reasonable temperatures.

Dell XPS 15 and XPS 17 release date
